Lake Okeechobee Fishing on the Glades County Shore

Lake Okeechobee fishing is the main reason most people find their way to Lakeport and Buckhead Ridge. The lake covers more than 700 square miles but averages only about nine feet deep, and its western and northwestern edges are a maze of grass beds, reeds and lily pads where largemouth bass feed. Speckled perch, which Floridians call specks or crappie, draw their own crowd in winter, and bluegill and catfish fill in the rest of the year.

Lakeport, founded in the 1910s as a farming colony, is strung out along State Road 78 beside the rim canal. Harney Pond Canal and Indian Prairie Canal both reach the lake from here, and each has a public recreation area with boat ramps and bank fishing. Little fish camps with cabins, RV spots, bait and boat rentals have lined this shore since the mid-1900s, and several still work with local guides who know which grass line is holding fish this week.

Buckhead Ridge, farther east near the Kissimmee River, is a cluster of canals, marinas and RV parks with direct access to the lake. It shares an Okeechobee mailing address but sits inside Glades County. Airboats are common on this side of the lake because the shallow marsh is hard to reach any other way; if you go out on one, ask for hearing protection.

North of Lakeport, the Brighton Seminole Reservation is ranch country owned by the Seminole Tribe of Florida. It is home to the Fred Smith Rodeo Arena, which hosts the Brighton Field Day Festival each February, and to Seminole Brighton Bay Hotel and Casino, which opened in 2025 with a hotel and several restaurants. Do I need a fishing license on Lake Okeechobee?

Most visiting anglers need a Florida freshwater fishing license, sold online by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. If you hire a guide, ask whether the trip includes one.

Where can I launch a boat in Lakeport?

Harney Pond Canal and Indian Prairie Canal both have public ramps, and several fish camps allow launching for a fee.
